This route is for living in Spain without working

The current Spanish Immigration Regulations define non-lucrative residence as a route for foreign nationals and qualifying family members who will live in Spain without carrying out employment or professional activity.

If your real plan is to continue working remotely from Spain, the first question should be whether another route — such as the Digital Nomad Visa / international telework authorisation — matches the facts better.

Financial means: 400% IPREM for the main applicant

The minimum financial test is linked to the IPREM in force when the visa or renewal is filed. The main applicant must show resources equivalent to 400% of the monthly IPREM for the relevant period, with an additional 100% of IPREM for each qualifying family member.

The legal percentage is more reliable than an old euro figure. The evidence also needs to explain that the applicant can support the household without needing to work in Spain.

Health insurance and the rest of the consular file

The initial route starts through the competent Spanish consular office and includes the application for the corresponding residence authorisation. In addition to financial means, the file must address health insurance and the general visa requirements, including the foreign documents required for the applicant's circumstances.

Foreign public documents may need legalisation or apostille and, where necessary, an accepted translation.

Initial validity and TIE

The initial non-lucrative residence authorisation is valid for one year. After entering Spain with the corresponding visa, the holder must complete the post-arrival steps required by the regulations, including applying for the TIE within the applicable period.

Renewal is not just another bank-balance check

For renewal, the regulations again require sufficient means and continued health insurance. They also require the holder to have resided in Spain in a real and effective way for more than 183 days during the calendar year, together with the other applicable conditions.

This makes travel history part of renewal planning. It is better to review absences before the renewal window opens rather than discover a problem after documents have already been prepared.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Planning to work remotely while applying under a route legally defined as non-working residence.
  • Using an outdated IPREM amount.
  • Showing funds without explaining ownership, availability or the family budget.
  • Buying a policy before checking whether its terms meet the immigration requirement.
  • Ignoring travel history until renewal.
  • Treating visa issuance, entry into Spain and TIE as one single step.
